People ask for an hourly rate as though that settles it. It does not, and the operators who quote one fastest are often the ones whose final invoice surprises you.
Access
The single most underrated cost driver. A wall you can stand in front of and a wall behind a fitted wardrobe are the same wall and not the same job. Ceiling height changes whether a step stool or a scaffold tower is involved. A second storey exterior changes the whole approach.
Clearing the space before anyone arrives is genuinely the cheapest thing you can do to reduce a quote. Moving your own furniture costs you twenty minutes and saves paid time.
Substrate
What is behind the surface decides the method, and the method decides the time. Mounting into timber studs, into steel studs, into brick, or into a hollow masonry block are four different jobs with four different fixings. This is most of why TV mounting quotes vary so much between houses that look identical from the street.
The same applies underfoot. Flooring onto a level subfloor is straightforward. Onto one that needs grinding or self levelling first is a different quote, and nobody can tell you which you have until the old covering comes up.
Matching
Making new work invisible next to old work is where the hours go. Texture matching a drywall patch into an existing wall so the repair disappears takes several times longer than filling the hole. Matching a paint that has faded for eight years on a south facing wall is not the same as opening a new tin of the original colour.
You can choose to pay less here. Repainting the whole wall is often cheaper than perfectly matching a patch in the middle of it, and it looks better. Ask for both numbers.
How the last person left it
A surprising share of the cost of any job is undoing someone else's shortcut. Fixings into plasterboard with no anchor. A previous repair done in filler with no tape. Flooring laid without expansion gaps. None of it is visible when you ask for a quote and all of it is visible ten minutes after work starts.
This is exactly why the estimate happens after a look at the job rather than over the phone. The figure we write down is one we have already checked, which is why it does not move.
What does not drive the cost
Distance, for us. A job in New Braunfels at the edge of the radius is priced identically to one in Stone Oak four miles away. No trip charge, no distance surcharge, no travel time on the invoice. That is unusual in this market and it is deliberate.
Bundling, on the other hand, genuinely does help. Setup and cleanup happen once whether we assemble one flat pack unit or four. If you have a list, send the whole list.
